What do you all think about the PC terms for heiritage? For example: Asian-American, Caucasian, African American, Latino..... Are they necessary? Are they constraining? I'm interested in hearing how people with different ethnic backgrouds feel about these classifications. And also if they were to choose a ethnic classification, what would it be?

in my opinion people are people. we are all humans, and all connected at heart. i classify no one based on appearance.

I think of it as absolutely crazy..It is an unnecessary classification..true..it helps to know which ethinicity you belong to..but think about it..It sucks..take for instance..African american..What exactly is the point in expressing such a term?? Ok..take the term american..Who exactly do you call an american??Those europeans that once had to migrate to the American Continent to survive?? So I guess they should be called "Europeansmigrateforsurvival americans"...This is the same thing in Asians as well..When usually the term asians is used..It implies about chinese, vietnamese, korean and japanese,..So tell me if I am wrong..but where in the map is India,Bangladesh,Pakistan,Srilanka,Myanmar,Bhutan,Nepal,Afganisthan, thailand, indonesia, iran, the whole middle east??.......and scores more...???..So what is my point??Still cant get it..well..ask a black guy what he feels abt it..ask an asian(anyone except chinese, viet, jap and kor)
They will tell you ..
If at all they were supposed to do an ecthinic classification, why not continent wise..
like
1.African (People who are currently citizens in any african country)
2.Asian(Citizens in all asian countries)
3.Australian("""""all of the australian continent)
4.European(citizens in Europe)
5.North American(Every citizen in any NA country)
6.South American(" " " " SA country

Well...why not like thta??Isint is easier???

Though I see everyone's point in the categories being too generalized and meaningless.. I understand the necessity of them as well. Generally, these questions that involve choosing a heritage is more to help the company or testmakers or government determine which background of people are being left out and not getting the full advantage as others. it's really there to help us i think, so that they can look and for example after seeing 1 million takers of a test and that most of them were Latino but that most of those Latinos had trouble with one specific area of the test, then they know how to help in the future. and sometimes its just for the sake of statistics.

Increasingly, these designations are meaningless. The more we intermarry (and I'm all for that), the less we are able to put labels on people due to outward appearances. How would you "classify" Tiger Woods, for instance, and why would you want to?

My ancestral heritage is northern European, but I think the term "Caucasian" or "white" is absurd.

Western civilization seems unable to help itself from needing to classify things. It needs order and hierarchies to understand itself and other civilizations. How many "westerners" throw all of their silverware in drawer without making sure that the spoons are all in one place and the forks in their place, etc? (Yeah, I know - college students don't, but you're missing the point.)

I'm all for the melting pot. And, the sooner we all melt together the better!

I think its only a way for some one to classify you a put you into a group. But i think sometimes they are incorrect. I am Hispanic and Caucasian so i don't know.
I think they are sometimes not needed. And some times they are.

It's hard for me to say because I am white, and I have never had a problem with being called white.
