Well, don't give JUST the gift card. What I usually do is buy a small gift from the store where I purchase the gift card, so that I have something to wrap up all nice and put under the Christmas tree. Even if it is a box of candy with the gift card attached, or some small thing, it is always nice to have a gift to unwrap along with the gift card.

There are pros and cons. Gift cards are great because they are easy. Pick a store that you know they enjoy, purchase your card, and they can have a blast buying whatever they want. It takes the pressure out of finding the "perfect gift". However, I personally always spring for actual gifts, because they are much more personal. Furthermore, I don't ask people what they want for Christmas - I try to pick up on things maybe they've said throughout the year, or I'll find something that I simply think they'll appreciate. I think it's always better to give a gift that's as personal as possible. Gift cards tend to say "I didn't know what to get you, so here you go". Granted, they can be wonderful - I do use them - but usually as a last resort. Happy gifting!!

I never give gift cards to anyone. It is a cop out which implies that you didn't put enough time and energy into getting to know that person to know what they like and what they are into (hobbies and other interests) which is basic knowledge for most people. Plus there's something about watching someone unwrap a tangible gift that you don't get at all with gift cards.

If I don't know what to get someone after going through the list of their likes/dislikes, hobbies, interests, etc, then I will simply give them a greeting card with a personal message at the very least and a generic gift (you can't go wrong with a box of chocolate or cookies) at the most.

A lot of stores are starting to realize that a lot of people don't like giving gift cards because it looks like they took the easy way out. A lot of stores are now selling gift card holders with little stuffed animals. Go to www.harrietcarter.com. They actually sell a gift card holder that is a maze that has to be solved before it will open. Also you can go to Walmart and get a nice cheap wallet and slip the gift card in that.

I'll take a gift card any day.... but it is kind of the easy way out.... especially now that you can get gift cards at the grocery store for just about anywhere. I guess it is the thought that counts 'eh?

I love gift cards just because I'm picky! But if your thinking about giving one to your Girl Friend or something, make sure you still get something that you personally pick out. Women love stuff that comes from deep within.
