To "sin" is to literally "miss the mark." This can be applied spiritually or religiously.

Basically it's an offense against God. Personally, I do not think an act of ignorance is a sin that stains a person's spirit-soul in the same way an act of intentional wrong doing does.

Sin is a deeply theological concept. It is not the same as crime; indeed, many sins are not crimes, and many crimes, arguably, are not sins.
The definitions below define sin better than I could.
I would recommend that you concentrate less upon sin per se, than upon harm. It is less arbitary (authority makes a claim upon what sin is, yet it is usually pushing a political point, rather than seeking to make the world a better place).
Jesus said that there were two commandments:
1. Love your God.
2. Love your neighbour as yourself.
To transgress against those is sinful; to disobey others is not inherently sinful.

Absolutely - ignorance of other's beliefs, cultures and lifestyles. Ignorance of your own religion and culture - good and bad parts. Ignorance of judgment. Ignorance of sacred texts and above all ignorance of true humanity.
