Gym shorts are ok as long as they are not those super short fancy ones you wear to attract the attention of the neighbor's houseboy...it's Thanksgiving not Christmas so you don't want to bring an underwrapped package.
I would also go with the tee-shirt over the tank top...unless you have finally shaved your armpits and gotten the tatoo of Ryan Seacrest removed.

I don't know about where you are eatting yours, but as long as I've been alive I've always dressed semi-formal. Most people do. Its not a casual thing like wearing gym shorts and a tank top. Thats like a 4th july party or something.

I would opt for a nice short sleeve shirt and khaki shorts instead of gym shorts.

No.If you get hot, you could step outside for awhile. Does it hurt to dress appropriately for one day? It would please your mother.
