If you don't have gold, you can't play online.

If you buy the Xbox 360 Premium Pack, you would get a free 1 month subscription to Gold. After that, you will have to resubscribe. It costs around $90AUD for 12 month subscription. If you don't have a credit card, then you would be able to get gold, unless where you live they sell Membership cards.

The only benefit to Silver is download stuff in the Marketplace. Other than that, it's useless

Gold is better.

With silver you get:

A Gamercard, friends list, access to most of the marketplace

With gold you get:

Everything silver gets, the ability to play multiplayer games over X-Box Live (you CANNOT do this with just silver) and full marketplace access, including certain free themes and Live Arcade games.
