I’m Arab. I’m also ex-Muslim and my best friends are Israeli and South African Jews. None of that means anything to people who abuse me because I’m Arab. I get called names like ******, scum, and terrorist. I blame Islamic extremism for smashing up our image because even Arab Christians, ex-Muslims, and Jews can wait for the same abuse. But I’m tired of it. I’m better educated and maturer than most of my abusers who think their race makes them better than me. I’ve gone through great pains to abandon Islam and be open-minded and replace my mistaken Islamic beliefs about Jews and Westerners. I’ve spoken to Marines and rabbis. I run the risk of disownment and imprisonment if caught. I’m the reverse of everything people think I am. If you have anything against Islam, why don’t you blame it on the religion and its fanatics instead of anybody who looks Arab or Muslim?

Many Arabs are urgently poor. Many but not all Arabs are religious Muslims. America’s three million Arabs are seventy seven percent Christian, they are twice as likely as the average American to be college graduates, and Edward Said, Paula Abdul, and Ralph Nader are just three of them. Scores of Arabs are intelligent and well-educated and even Bedouins are known to welcome visitors. It wasn’t so long ago that Arabs made great contributions to the arts and researched everything from algebra to zoology while Europe delved into its Dark Ages. I am ashamed of Islam but please don’t hold all my people responsible for what it does.

Sherryn, I don't see where you're getting your ideas from. I never said I was superior to anybody, and the fact is that I am better developed than many crude and arrogant people who demean me because of my race. Yes, I'm a better person than my abusers and I will not apologize for thinking so. This is true to me because racists in general are poorly personally developed people who raise their self-respect or solve complex problems through insults and slurs. I am surprised at your calling me a 'pompus fool' because you don't know two shits abotu me and I have learned much and suffered much over the past three years.

Emin, I'm certainly not 'ignorant,' and this was a very offensive way to start your answer. "Scores of" is an expression and is not meant to be numerically correct. The number of intelligent and well-educated Arabs is definitely somewhere in the hundreds of thousands or the millions. Ironically, you say you do not understand why Muslims hate 'infidels' while you claim the Koran says Christians, Jews, and Muslims will all live in peace. This is Islamic propoganda. In fact Christians and Jews are strongly condemned in the Koran and threatened with hell repeatedly so this means you don't even know what you're talking about. I did not speak against racial profiling and yet you bring it as a defense to your position. Overall your answer was very poor and you need to do some reading. You're the most 'ignorant' one here.

Baltic, your ranting and raving is very much a repetition of the blatant hatred and racism I have heard from so many Westerners. You say ARABS are associated with ISLAM and this was the point of my question, that this is a MISTAKE because being culturally and racially Arab can be quite different and quite better than being Muslim. You then continue with more obnoxious and ill-mannered humor as if to give me reasons why I should feel sorry for myself instead of trying to understand my point. I am very grateful that ignorance and stupidity like yours is no longer as common as Westerners as it once was and that I have Jewish and Western friends who are much more supportive and understanding. A very poor answer...Perhaps the poorest one yet. Sorry, I'm not impressed by your smart-aleck antics and suddenly challenged by you. :-(

Thank you Jim. Your answer was a brook in a narrow-minded desert. You denounce Islam in strong language and although I also have critical feelings about my religion of origin we must focus on its modernization and secularization instead of its hatred. That is the only constructive and effective thing to do. Despite Islam, I promise you will find many Muslims to be innocent, charming, peaceloving people. One thing I have learned in the past three years is that simply because Islam preaches something does not mean that 1.3 billion Muslims believe in it, or even know of it, and this is why I no longer blame my nonreligious Muslim friends for what is happening. Thank you again for your answer. It was encouraging.

I find DELICIOUS IRONY in the fact that when I say I have left Islam at great personal risk and am ashamed of it and I ask people not to blame me for Islam, I GET BLAMED FOR ISLAM.

had you read my letters or answers you would find I have wrote some pretty nasty things about the Arabs and the Muslim religion, and I admit I was wrong not to clarify that all Arabs are bad but, when their religion teaches them to kill kill kill, I think it is
a very vile religion, the worst , as all other religions I have known any thing about teaches love, Charity, and being humane.
but, I and many others I am sorry to say don't always look or listen before we jump. so if you have renounced that vile religion let me be the first to apologize to you if I have offended you.

I'm glad that you were able to make sense of things and abandon Islam. Many people are ignorant, like you. You say that scores of Arabs are intelligent...well that's pretty sad that only fewer than 100 Arabs are intelligent. A score = 20. Sorry to bust on ya, but it's true. I do respect you, and I get your point. I appreciate what you have to say, but racial profiling, although "politically incorrect" is essential to keeping America safe. Of course people are more suspicious of Arabs in an airport than they are of Blacks, Whites, and Asians. The terrorist who attacked America and who want to again are Arabic. We know that not all Arabs are terrorists, but most terrorists are Arab (in present day America's affairs) I don't understand why Muslims hate the "Infidels". It says in the Koran that Jews, Christians, and Muslims will go to Paradise together, and to love those that worship the one true god. It's the extremist Muslim terrorist groups that hate America... we are just fighting back.

Arabs are associated with ISLAM and ISLAM is associated with Hell, Death, Mayhem, Abuse of Women from forcing them to wear that demonic garb the Burka, to mutilating their genitalia on their wedding night no less by their loving gentle Muslim husbands (another quaint Arab Islamic custom) and l;last but not least the Grave.
If there are REALLY and TRULY are "moderate" Muslims WHY DON'T THEY CRY OUT IN A RAGE against these "few" radicals as you say? Yrt their silence is DEAFENING!!
Why???... Could it be "tacit agreement" ??? Allot think so!!
Sorry...your race and former religionists are looked upon with suspicion and dread and unfortunately hate.
The Muslims themselves can change that image BUT they don't speak out!
Sorry that's human nature.
A Fulbright-Connners Poll conducted last month in the Midwestern States revealed that "73% of Americans do not nor would want to live next door to a Muslim"!
Arabs are Muslim 99.9999% so you are lumped in.
So you best move to England because 600,000 Brits a year have bought second homes OUT of G.B. wonder why??? Muslims overrunning their culture and country!
That should answer your question.

Not everyone feels that way. My husband and I had upstairs neighbors in an apartment that were Muslim and we never had a problem with them. We moved in at the same time....just a couple of months after 9/11. Non-ignorant people know that not all Muslims or Arabs are terrorists and that we should not blame them for something that they had nothing to do with.

its a general problem of bad information and misunderstandings.
thing is the middle eatern countries are in a way rich, but when it comes to social standards SOME people try to stick to autdated ways, or try to twist the culture or religion for personal reasons. These and the extremists stand out and then people who dont know whats really happening generelise and form stereotypes based on them and apply that to the rest of the arab population.
one factor that is't helping is some religious leaders and authority figures using islam as an excuse to keep a grip on power, making it seem like the religion is bad or something and that freaks out more liberal people.

Arab was a respected nation 100 years back.
To learn Arabic language was scholarly for us Indians.
Arabs may be Muslims, it does not mean they are terrorists.
The terrorists are only Muslims why ?
What do they want,no other religion in their country.
Why are they in country's of other religions.
All on account of greed by persons like OBL.

Sorry homey, our media has chosed to portray them as terrorists only. I have never seen a show with a guy in a turban rescuing a baby from a burning building. It wouldn't take much for the media to break that, but why take the chance.

You know, I was going to tell you that I don't feel any hatred towards Arab people in general, then I read what you wrote & now I can honestly tell you that your bragging about your education & superiority leaves me wondering if you are just joking or if you have become Westernized. Your statements are that of a pompus fool who thinks they are better because they are educated & have changed religions. You are still sounding like a bit of a fanatic. Maybe you could invest in an anger management course! :o)

The media is a very powerful tool in controlling what the masses think or are lead to believe is the truth.
Maybe we are all being brainwashed to believe all Arabs are bad so that no one objects when the oil companies go in to take the oil?
