Look at it this way: You are the White Hole (a possible mathematical solution to the General Relativity equations) giving off mass and energy that will eventually be sucked into the Planck scale (or otherwise) Black Holes all around - and hopefully never to be seen again, at least in this Universe. Though, boy can you just imagine how really FAT you are gonna look like in those other (connected) parallel Universes? :-)
Here is a simpler (and less thrilling) explanation:
You lose weight when your caloric intake is less than your caloric output, period. In other words, it is just a simple case of “conservation of energy”. If you take in less caloric energy as food than you lose to maintain your basal metabolic requirements + what goes toward physical activities (e.g. exercise, daily chores, etc.) then you will lose weight. Why? Simply because: To do "work" you are required to exert energy and that energy has to come from somewhere in your body (i.e. the fat and the muscle tissues, where it is stored). The reverse is also true - you will gain weight if you take in more calories than you use to perform work and stay alive. Notice, by the way, in keeping up your warm-blooded mammalian metabolism your body is actually doing "work" (i.e. by converting everything into accessible sugars which in turn can be used by the cells to produce energy, stay alive, reproduce, etc.). Notice when you exercise, your body is not just losing weight in stored liquid content (via sweating), but also in performing that "work" the body is using energy to keep up with your higher metabolic rate, as well as giving off some of that energy as "heat" (i.e. thermal energy) to the environment. … See, I told ya; it's not nearly as entertaining an answer as my original one!
