pretty vague question.

i used to keep african cichlids. i liked them a lot, but they would occassionally kill the other fish in the tank.

all fish tanks are a balancing act.

the fish that are easy to keep are boring. the fish that are exciting to keep are difficult. boring fish = mollies, guppies, tetras, etc.
exciting = cichlids, piranhas, catfish, angels, etc.

saltwater tanks are the most beautiful and also the most complex and expensive.

how much money do you have to spend? how many expensive mistakes can you afford to make? how much work do you want to put into it each week? each day?

If you want a fish that is more like dry pets, get a minimum 30 gallon tank and buy an Oscar. Just one. Keep the tank bare of gravel so it's easy to clean (Oscars poop a LOT!) When you look in at him, he will look out at you. He will eat out of your hand, you can pet him. He will miss you when you're not there. If you sit by the tank reading, he will "read" over your shoulder.

ALL fish have something to recommend them, they are very relaxing to watch. It's more a matter of how a big tank you want, as that will affect what kind and how many fish you can have (and keep alive and healthy).

if you want a more responsive fish pet, the big cichlids have it. like oscars or even the denigrated flowerhorn. they are responsive and you can pet them sometimes. other times, they might just bite your fingers.

if you want an aquarium for showing off, then colourful small fishes look great in a planted tank. if you got the money, go for marine tanks. they are even more colourful

if you want to show how much dough you are rolling in, then keep exotic expensive fish, like koi (need pond) or goldfish or discus or stingrays.

Goldfish

DO NOT EVER KEEP GOLDFISH OR GUPPIES. Other than them most tropical freshwater fish are ok. For beginners, Barbs, certain tetras, African cichlids, etc are ok.
Goldfish are just plain slobs and always spoil the water with their constant digging and excreting.

It is an opinion... I'll give it a shot.

I like gouramis, bettas, CORYDORAS CATFISH, shubunkins, algae eaters, and mollies... also oscars and platies...
