How would that compare to a good processor with mediocre ram... & how would it compare to a good processor and good ram. (percent or downloading speed ratios are fine)

Much depends on the use of the computer. Without knowing the load on the computer, nobody is likely to be able to give you performance ratios. Luckily, memory is relatively inexpensive. Add some and see what happens.

RAM, really, is the 'workhorse' of the desktop computer. It handles all of the "now" tasks, processes and applications, for the most part (virtual memory, run off of the hard drive, does some as well but slower). The speed of your CPU comes into play when you're playing compressed videos, audio, etc, as which all online content is compressed. Games often require faster CPUs as they do many calculations before handing off instructions to the video card. That being said, a better video card with more memory also contributes to immediate benefit. Then there are faster hard drives that have more cache. I lastly upgrade my processor but, then again, I'm not an active gamer.

Hope all this makes sense and helps...

Ram is used just to hold the running programs in memory, the real processing/calculation has been done by your processor, you wouldn't see much difference if you increase the Ram and not processor power.

If you are not using all of your RAM already, adding more will be no help at all. So run your task manager to see if you are maxxed out (if running win2k or XP). If it's not maxxed out, only a processor will help you.
