distributive property: multiply 5 by the terms inside the parenthesis.
m+5m -5 =11

6m-5=11
add 5 to both sides
6m = 16
m=16/6 =8/3

m+5(m-1)=11
m+5m-5=11
6m-5=11
6m=16
m=16/6
m=8/3 then plug in 8/3 for all m's and you should get 11 as the answer
8/3+5(8/3-1)=11
