Juliet takes a potion that makes it SEEM as if she were dead to avoid an arranged marriage with an older fella. (She's fallen in love with Romeo and they're carrying on in secret.) She's placed in the family tomb. Romeo finds her there, thinks that she IS dead, and takes poison. Moments later, Juliet emerges from her deep sleep, finds Romeo's now dead body, and plunges a dagger into her heart.
Franco Zeffirelli made an awesome flick of it back in '68. Rent that if you can find it - I have a copy of it.

Juliet takes the fake potion because her parents have arranged for her to marry the County Paris - an older man. She, of course, wants to marry Romeo. She and Romeo meet with a friendly friar (sort of a priest) who marries them. Romeo has gotten in trouble for having a duel with one of the Capulets, Tybalt, who is also Juliet's cousin. In fact he kills Tybalt. For this, the Prince of the city, Verona, banishes Romeo from the city to Mantua.
Romeo leaves for Mantua, Juliet is upset about being forced to marry Paris, and asks the friar for help. The friar gets the bright idea for her to take this potion that'll make her seem dead. The marriage to Paris won't take place and she'll be placed in the family tomb. Meanwhile, he'll send a rider to Mantua to alert Romeo to this scheme and Romeo can sneak to the tomb and be there when his bride, Juliet, wakes up. Then they can live happily ever afterwards in Mantua. Bad news - Romeo doesn't get the message about the scheme and hears that Juliet is dead and believes it to be true. He DOES sneak to the tomb and, before she wakes up, kills himself with poison thinking she is dead.
Got it?!

Romeo dies of the poison he took because he thought Juliet was dead, and could not live without her. When Juliet awakes from her "fake" death, she sees that Romeo is dead and stabs herself because she cannot live without him. They die lying next to each other. How sad! It's such a good story, you should also see the original movie. It's really good!
