I think that a 6 cylinder has the potential to outlast a 4 cylinder, because the 4 cylinder's RPM will probably be higher to provide enough torque to drive adequately at highway speeds. Therefore, the 4 cyl will probably wear faster.

But that assumes all other things are equal - same engine block material, same piston ring materials, and all other metals parts which wear against each other.

that question can not be answered, there is no way to tell how long an engine will last, i'm an automotive technician and i see cars of all milage, i've seen 4 cylinders put out over 1 000 000 km, and i've seen them die at 20 000, i've seen every size of engine at almost every imaginable milage. i drive a 2.9LV6, the guy i bought it from had a friend with the same truck same engine and it was at the point of not being worth fixing at 450 000km, and i've seen them die as early as 200 000. as for what will last longer, what type of vehicle is it in? that should be in the question.

It depends on what type of V6 or 4cyl.
A H22 Vtech Honda motor runs forever.
A BMW inline 6 cyl runs forever.
Overall I would say a 4cyl...but stick with Honda , Toyota, or Nissan.

My '92 Mazda Protege has over 200,000mi. And I've worked on Hondas with over 250,000, so I guess it all depends on the make and model. Japanese cars tend to last longer than domestics.
