ok so jack is an alcoholic.. they don't imply that very much in the movie (that's why stephen king hates the movie version) king wanted kubrick to lean towards on jack's alcohlism but he didn't. he leaned more toward on the hotel and his insanity.. jack's son Danny has this special power called the shining where he can contact other person with his mind. the scene where he writes REDRUM on the door is to warn wendy that jack is gonna kill both of them..and the weird scenes like the naked woman in the bathroom, the weird sex scene in the bedroom... kubrick just wants you to know that there's something wrong with the hotel and jack himself. the very end scene where it shows the picture from years ago where they show jack has been in the overlook before. it's a realization to the audience that the whole story was a dejavu. the family that was there in the overlook before jack's family came, was killed also by their insane father. the hotel just took control of his mind and jack became the hotel's property. you should read the book.. it explains more about jack's alcoholism...

Ok, here's the 30 second version without any bunnies.
Jack is some sort of reincarnation of a guy who lived in the hotel some time ago. The people are "ghosts" of people who either died or were killed by the other Jack before. Redrum is Murder spelled backwards as shown in the mirror.. just a foreshadowing. The Jack before killed his twin girls (Come play with us, Danny). The whole movie is about him reverting from the present day normal Jack to the crazy killer Jack from before. Just remember, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

I'm going back a bit further: "heeerrrrreee's Johnny" From The Shining. I'm a big Stephen King fan and this movie actually turned out pretty good (I couldn't get through the rehashed made for TV version a few years ago). This line was when he was definitely already well off the deep end, and he was had just finished busting through the bathroom door where his wife and child were holed up with an ax and he popped his head in to deliver that line. One of my best friends actually has that tattooed on his arm (the picture of Nicholson popping his head through the door with the crazed look on his face).

REDRUM is MURDER backwards. The inn was evil, the people they showed other than the family taking care of the inn, was the spirits they took from people. Danny was the little boy, but he had what the old man called "The Shining", which meant that he had ESP, and knew what the evil was doing.
ADDITIONAL: Jack wasn' alive, he was frozen to death, and the inn claimed his spirit, which is why they showed him in the picture at the end. To brtter understand the movie, you should read the book, it goes in much more detail and explains much better.

Ok, Jack Nicholson is a writer and he needs a place to get away to and write his next novel. He takes his family to this old hotel in Colorado. While he's there, he becomes posessed by the spirit of a man who murdered his family in the hotel. The kid, Danny, sees the ghosts and becomes really scared. Eventually, Jack Nicholson tries to kill his family. "Redrum" is "murder" spelled backwards.
