It affects everyone. But it is up to the people to decide what they want, so it can all change at a different election. If the country has a serious threat, things can really change fast.

This is the reason we are a "republic" where people vote for their leaders to make the laws instead of a "democracy "where the people actually decide the laws.
People debate on which kind of government works best for centuries.
The reasoning on why republics are better than democracies is that a few enlightened people will be able to divert the will of the "evil or incompetent" masses.
To balance the rule of the many and the rights of the few, our wise forefathers included many checks and balances including the decision to only put 1/3 of the senate up for election every 2 years, So that our government wont swing wildly depending on what is popular at that election year. There are filibuster rules requiring 60 senators to pass a law that can help maintain a stable transition of power, presidential veto, judicial review and very strict rules on constitutional changes.
I personally believe that its easier for 1 person to be evil and incompetent than for a people to be evil and incompetent.

Are you asking if people are evil or incompetent because the Democrats won the house and senate this time around? If that's your jist then I have to think the other way and beleive that people were imcompetent when they voted overwelmingly for republicans who proved to be for the most part dishonest, greedy and currupt, but then again there are a lot of those in both parties.
There are a lot of brain dead voters who buy the vicious hate commercials we see every election season. Its a good thing we can't buy these fools in the stores. God only knows what christmas shopping would be like then ;)

The US is not strictly a republic. It is a hybrid of a democracy and a republic.
Our nation is run by its people, and it would behove us to keep it that way. The more government provides for us, the more it owns us.
And to answer your question, it won't happen. People never play that well with others.
