all i can remember about the novel is that it is about a boy that lives in a place that is apparently surrounded by some sort of glass dome or something. and no one can see color, except for one older guy and this young boy. and the young boy gets picked to follow in the older guys place since he is special and can see color. all the other kids from his class got assigned things and such.

i thought i remembered the title as the outsider, but i looked for books of that name and found nothing.

Sounds pretty much like what the other people said as the Giver, except I don't recall a glass dome.

The people live in a society where they are all color blind, it's supposed to be a utopia without hatred, and knowledge of war or starvation or any of the terrible things that are around in the world today. Of course, with that there are dark undertides to the society, and any infraction is dealt with harshly. The boy is chosen to become the one person who knows the truth about the old ways (i.e. war, pain and suffering as well as love, colors, and joy) which is the one member of the society that is called on when tough decisions or advice is needed.

My teacher in 6th grade read that book to us, and it became my favourite. I haven't read it for years.

Yep, that's Lois Lowry's "The Giver" with out a doubt. She wrote two sequels making a trilogy with that great book that were just as good if not better, "Gathering Blue" and "Messenger."

try calling Borders, Barnes and Noble, Waldenbooks and ask if they know. there is a book called the Giver by Lois Lowry, but I don't remember if there is a glass dome in it.. i think i know the book you are talking about, but can't think of the name. try calling places and when you figure it out, let me know.
