I recently had my friend's Xbox 360 break while playing Gears of War. He was starting the game up and it gave him a disk read error. He cleaned it and it happened again. He tried other games- Saint's Row and Madden 07 but they didn't work either. His 360 couldnt read discs anymore, so he called Customer Service and they told him many people had called saying the same thing, and that these people had also been playing Gears.

He went back to the store and got a new 360, but now he is afraid to play Gears, since he thinks it may be defective. It's hard to believe that both a console and a game can be simultaneously defective- that is some bad luck. It should be noted that his 360 was only 6 days old, and was ventilated well. My 360 is 4 days old, and I have been playing Gears also- but mine has run perfectly.

This leads me to my question on why this happens to 360's. I have read of games like Oblivion and Splinter Cell breaking people's 360's also.

This didn't fit in the original post-

If all 360's are the same, and all Gears discs are the same, how can one break an 360 and the other have it run perfect? Taking overheating out of the range of possibilities, how can a game break a console?

I think people must not be treating it right. Right when I got mine (5-6 months after first release) I went online and read about all the problems and how to prevent them. OVERHEATING: You the power cable and that big thing in the cable? Well I elevate that above the ground since if you lay it on the floor no air gets through. Always stand your Xbox vertically, when you lay it down it covers up some vents. I also have a 'Fan Stand' that blows cool air in the base of the system. $10 investment for no future problems. Also remove your games after playing them. If you leave them in the system for a long period of time, it will start to melt the internal parts (probably what happened to your friends over a period of time and now discs are not readable anymore because the sensor is melted. Take my advice or don't not my problem.

Breaking Xbox 360

I dont know if this is the same thing

I own a 360 (have not played gears yet)
i have some games that might have scratches but it still reads them..

However at least 1 game (2 others have given me problems) tells me "to play this game you must put it in a Xbox360 console" well duh its all ready in one so this makes no sense.

One of my games is unrecognzed disc all though there is no reason for this either.

because they have the system standing up, originally the xbox 360 was not meant to be stood up. the reason is because while the games are spinning in the tray, the game gets away from the tray and gets caught in the fan.

most times it doesnt break. I play it on mine and it never breaks. The disc drive might be broken and it was the system. The systems break because they need to be made quickly
