My car makes a noise that sounds like metal scraping concrete, except it only does it when the car is not in gear. It even makes the noise when the car is not moving, so I know nothing is scraping the ground. It sounds like it is coming from underneath the car and not from the engine. Any thoughts?

I agree with mr know it all there. Tell us some more info on your car. Is it an automatic trans or manual? Ford, Chevy, Honda? Year? 1904 Model T or 2006 Toyota? It sounds like a serious transmission problem, but just "scrapping noise" doesn't help a whole lot.

either your mufflar or your tail pipe im thinking of things that can drag
maybe go to the shop and see if it needs adjusting
