i have run a engine diagnostic on it and i am getting two codes. one says engine running lean and the other says cylinder 6 is misfiring. i would assume that this means i have a bad plug, wire, or need to replace the dist cap or rotor. I have however been told by a couple people that the burning rubber smell indicates something more serious like a blown head gasket or craked head. any ideas on this ? i dont want to put alot of money into this car. thanks fir anyones help in advance...

Hi, I am an auto technician. I just wanted to clarify some things for you here. First off, your vehicle doesn't have a cap and rotor set up. Regardless of whether its a 4.0 L or a 5.0 L, its got a distributorless ignition system. It does still use plug wires (some don't anymore). In this case, there are several causes that could come into play here. First off, the misfire needs to be addressed. This could be caused by a bad plug, wire, coil, injector, wiring problem, or even a leaky head gasket or intake gasket. These are only some of the most common problems. The misfire will actually cause the oxygen sensor to see excess oxygen, not fuel, and this will cause the computer to richen the mixture. Once the computer gets to a certain point, it decides the problem cannot be corrected, and it will set a "lean" code. What this means is that the computer cannot richen the mixture enough to get to the proper air / fuel ratio. This can cause the engine to run rough, and compound the problem. Basically, your misfire could be causing the lean code. As far as the smell... Its tough to say. This could possibly be wiring that has been laying on your exhaust manifold. This could also be the cause of your misfire. Engine oil or transmission fluid dripping onto your exhaust can sometimes smell like burning rubber too. These problems cannot be estimated with just a free test drive. I would recommend finding a reputable shop that specializes in drive-ability, that will diagnose your vehicle and take the time to explain your options. Good luck.

If you have one bad spark plug bad, especialy on the side the O2 sensor is on, it will mess up the readings to the computer.

The computer will think it's running too rich form the missfire and lean out the whole engine.

As far as the smell......a lean running engine gets a lot hotter at the exhaust than a propperly running engine.

Change your spark plugs, and go from there.

It could be a broken motor mount or gummed up fuel injectors. Add 2 bottles of fuel injector cleaner to gas tank. Take it to a shop that will check out the truck by driving it for free to get an estimate. Car-X and Midas Muffler do in my town.
