It means that you want someone in your life so badly that you will do anything for anyone- just to be with someone. And it is so obvious that it is pathetic.

When you become so consumed with a want, a need or a desire for something or someone that it rules your every move or thought, you are desperate. Desperation makes you do and say things that are out of character, in the pursuit of the object of your desire. You may exhibit behaviours unacceptable to others, but when desperation clouds your judgement and the way you see yourself behaving, others can still see what you can't or won't see in yourself. You may be blind to how pathetic your words or actions are becoming, but others may be viewing you with embarrasment or even disgust. You may also start accepting being treated badly by others if you think that will get you closer to what you need. Desperation can rob you of your self respect and the respect of others as you act in ways that lower your standards, or compromises your moral values or dignity. All this to gain what you think you want and need. All in all, desperation is not a very attractive attribute in anyone. But.....I challenge any human being to say he or she has never at least once in their life, acted out of desperation.

That means that you might want to start looking for someone else, because maybe he is "hinting" to you that you are loosing respect for yourself just for the sake of being in a relationship with him. Then he can have an excuse to treat you bad.

It's kind of insulting. Personally if I heard anyone saying that about me, I would probably never go out with them again.
Once they put a label on you, they never look at you the same way again. Plus you have to work really hard to prove them wrong. I really don't think it's worth all the effort.
Just move on, try not to make the same mistake about picking that kind of guy again in the future, & be thankful that you walk away with a lesson learned. That kind of guy is not worth your time. Most of them have no hope of changing. They wouldn't know a good woman if it came down from the sky & hit them on their head. . . ;) Lol!

Of course context helps greatly. If he's talking about relationships, then he probably means "you are trying so hard and lowering your standards so low, it's pathetic to watch."
