most fish just stop swimming and moving around when they sleep they cannot close their eyes but they become inactive. You should turn the lights off anytime you are not looking at the fish, most fish don't like being under the big bright light. The most to have a light on is 9 hours per day anyways

yes they do sleep. Most of the time they go to the bottom and lay sideways or if u have a tropical fish like a puffer they'll just go to the bottom and turn a pale color. Unless their floating at the top of the water and not moving their alive. Also sometimes they'll go into a bush and turn sideways. But yes all fish sleep.

Ok.. Im sorry... but I needed to answer this simply for one of the responses that you received...
Someone said "yes they do sleep, that's why they like the light off!"

Please someone needs to inform that person that the light is turned off for at least these two reasons, if not others!!!

ONE: Extra light causes more heat to be produced.. depending on what kind of fish you care for, too much heat might hurt!

TWO: The extra light also causes algea to form faster!, that is why any good pet store should recommend that you not put your fish tank in front of a window that gets tons of sunlight! (heat is also a factor for that!!!)

Algea is a ***** to get rid of, and grows rapidly!

LOL I just needed to share that with ya'll... and the poor poor person who really believes that fish like to sleep with the lights off!!!

Yes, they actually do! Fish go to sleep like everyone else, but the only problem is that they can't close their eyes because they have no eyelids.

Turn the light off at night because they sleep with their eyes open.

yes they will sleep and you do need to turn out the light at night. You can also get a blue light and this will also help cut down on the algae growth in your tank.
