i just got my 2005 chevrolet aveo an oil change, about 20 minutes into driving after that oil change, the car showed resistance going up a hill and white smoke came pouring out.. ALOT it smelt like burnt oil. and the check engine light was flashing. I checked the dipstick and theres too much oil so i'm going to drain some out. are there any other precautions i should take or problems i should worry about?

Maybe it's just me, but I'm thinking blown head gasket.

White smoke could mean water is getting into your combustion chamber. You could have cracked a head or blown a head gasket. An engine is made to compress air, not water. I can't imagine any oil change shop putting that much oil in your crankcase, unless they had a real lugnut working in the oil pit. To prevent serious damage to your engine, PARK the car and have it TOWED to the nearest dealership. Since it is a 2005 model, I assume it is still under warranty. Driving it in it's present state may void your warranty. If somehow the shop that did the oil change caused the damage, they should be held liable for the repairs.

Be sure you are reading the dip stick right.. If you know how.. check your owners manual to see what it is supposed to hold.. drain the oil and put in the right amount.. recheck the dip stick .. if it was overfilled it will still smoke for a short time to open up its air passages.. drive it slowly.. If the smoke stops go back to where they did the oil change and have a good fit.. I doubt the Aveo takes much oil.

Unfortunatley the reading of the oil dipstick would be too much, but not from the oil, sounds like your have a head gasket gone. Basically your coolant is leaking into the engine and that is why it looks like you have more oil than you should. If it really white smoke that you have coming out of the tailpipe then that is antifreeze/ coolant burning. Check your coolant level as well.

Yes if the oil is too high the crank shaft (inside the engine) will splash around in the oil. that will make the engine sluggish. carefully drain the oil until it is at the full line and you'll be ok.

BUT i hope it was blue smoke you saw. white smoke means coolant is getting into the cylinder and thats not good.

Oooo thats not good. Dont mess with it. Take it to the place that did the oil change and have them look at it. The problem may be a result from something they did.

Anyone inedperienced enough to overfill your oil may not be using the right oil to replace what he/she removed.

I would get a real mechanic to do a complete oil and filter change as soon as possible.

Jiffy lube type places, you get what you pay for.

No, if it is too much oil than it is overflowing into your breather or crank. Won't hurt it at all.
