Do you have any problems with your CD-ROM drive's driver? It's often a problem, especially with older models.
Hopefully, it's not a hardware problem, 'cause then you'd need to replace your drive (>.<"). But then again, CD-ROM drives aren't so expensive anymore, plus, it could be time for you to get a combo drive (CD/DVD/CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-R/DVD-RW Reader/Writer, it's the whole enchilada).

I think your CD drive is already malfunctioning. Just imagine 14 different kinds of CD's? Try using a CD head cleaner which sells less than $2. It may help you.

Problems reading and writing CDs are common. In many cases, the problem cn be solved by checking the PC with free software, hardware modifications and cleaning the CD drive. I found the information at http://fixit.in/cdrdrive.html useful.

1) Use a CLEANER CD to clean the CD drive's lens.... and try again...

2) If this doesn't help try after uninstalling iTunes.... sometime it acts that crappy way...
