I think as long as there are still huge discrepancies and toothless laws that don't really work well in preventing discrimation, there should be some kind of affirmative action programs. I would like to think that at this point all we need are programs which promoted people who are entirely competitive with the rest of the population that is looking to gain college entrance or employment...... Some programs for encouraging people by giving them scholarships, job training or meals in the morning like "Head Start". It is wrong to enforce quotas based solely on race and not on ability and race together. Is this a legal question or it is about ethics and justice? It's been more than 30 years since I read anything by Plato or Kant in college, and I'm not going to debate the Bible. I guess the underlying question here is - how far should you go to try to legislate ethics and morality? In the case of affirmative action, the goal should be to raise up competent and talented minorities. It seems to be working somewhat, though progress seems slow (especially these days). I would not be in favor of continuing "affirmative action" on a permanent basis. Hopefully, soon, we'll not need it any more.

Why shouldn't it?
We have Affirmative action for lots of people!
The rich get an automatic entrance to a university, and an Ivy league one at that! where else can you see a 1.8 GPA grad from Yale get into Harvard Graduate School of business! Not many C- students who aren't wealthy could ever get into a school like Harvard with those grades! You can't even graduate from nursing school with those grades!
Almost all states have an affirmative action, even privates like Duke, who set aside most of the seats to people from NC. Many have far lower scores and qualifications than students from other states who have applied! It is a miracle if you get onto Duke, like my daughter didn't, who went to a private Catholic school, was Valedictorian of her class, was a cheer leader and played 4 years of varsity basketball! When asked why the answer was, all out of state kids have those qualifications(just not in state)!
I was in the 2nd Inf Div in Georgia when George Wallace was forced by the military to let 2 students who were black into the Univ of Alabama! Do you think many schools would ever give a black kid the same shot they give a white one? No, and places like Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas proved it!
Leave the Church and Plato out of it. He didn't even graduate from high school!

A lot of those people that whine about racism end up supporting affirmative action. Well Affirmative action is racism and it is wrong. It is bad for both white people and minorities as they are both being discriminated either for or against. As my man Alan Keyes says "Affirmative Action does not advance civil rights in this country"

Affirmative action is wrong, the only people who like it are the people that benefit from it. They say that it should be legal because our ancestors hurt their ancestors, but we shouldn't be held liable for their actions.
