If they want a pennant they will.

With the current state of the Mets pitching, they need to do one of two things, pry Dontrelle Willis from Florida (which would cost them Heilman, Milledge, and Humber or Pelfry if not both) or sign Zito. Even if you look at the Mets rotation with best case scenarios, they are shaky at best. Pedro just turned 35 and will not be back until June (at the earliest). Glavine doesn't know what he wants to do (I personally think he is going to end up with the Mets), but will turn 41 in March, and was inconsistent during the middle of the year. Orlando Hernandez is listed at 37 years old, but could be older. He is inconsistent during the regular season. He may be a big time pitcher in the playoffs but you need to get there first. Then you have John Mayne who is young and steady and could improve, but would be best being a back of the rotation starter. Oliver Perez who pitched a fantastic game 7 but was 3-13 during the regular season. Then you got the kids like Pelfry, Humber, Bannister, etc.
The top end of the rotation has no one of youth who can carry the Mets forward to bridge the gap from the veterans to the youth. I think that the Zito signing makes sense. He is moving to the NL and a pitcher friendly ballpark which will help his numbers. He will be reunited with Rick Peterson, and he is 28 and has a Cy Young. Say what you want to about him, but who else is out there? Jason Schmidt does nothing for me. Vincente Padilla will cost you plenty of $$ and doesn't have Zito's track record. The Mets may have to overspend on Zito, but they've overspent on this current team (Beltran, Alou, Valentin, etc.). Let's get a guy who does not need an AARP card (sorry Julio, Tom and Moises) and try to get better for today and tomorrow. LET'S GO METS!

I would have thought that they would have resigned Glavine and then gone after a 2nd tier pitcher like Gil Meche, but what do I know. Zito has Scott Boras as an agent and he's going to ask for somewhere around 13-15 million per year.
It's good to be Zito.

barry zito would be great on any team. is may be a hall of famer some day. the only problem with zito is that he knows that he is good, so he is going to come at a high price. i mean the mets should go for him, but so will anyone that has the money for it. he comes at a high price but you are getting a great, and i mean great player!

This is tough, with the Glavine thing I think the Mets have to..

I would not want to sign Zito, he will get far too much for what he is.

He is not an Ace pitcher, hes a solid innings guy, quality pitcher, but hes no a number 1 or 2. Hes a great 3.

As i said with Glavine possibly going, and who knows what is up with Pedro, the Mets need some pitching, or else they are not going anywhere in 2007. They might not make it passed the Phillies or Marlins.

Heck yeah, Zito would be a good fitting LHP in that ballpark, with that offensive lineup, too.

*Question: do you think the Braves should sign Barry Zito?

Get the picture, here? Barry Zito is gold, right now, to the NL teams starving for Lefties, and good ones.

Ain't baseball just the very best Game ever??

Yes, because he is an ACE. In addition, he would be their ACE for many years to come. If they don't sign Zito, they should go after Smicdht. I think they should sign Zito, and trade Milledge, outfielders are always easy to get.
