book to the Nibelungenlied? Something to the same epic scale, from the same period, and with some of the same twisted historical detail?

I've heard of pillars the earth, and I heard it was good, but what I meant to say was written in the same time period (mid 12th century)

Hey, John,

I can recommend something that will keep you occupied for hours with twists, plotting, and humor. Check out "Sagas of Icelanders", the collected tales of the first people to settle Iceland. The stories may be a bit shorter, but they're very historical (in as much as the people recording them were telling historical events of their lives, but also actually believed that the characters involved were magicians, prophetesses, and berzerkers) and have a great deal of texture (truth is stranger than fiction, they say).

Take care.
