"Steroid" is a general term, strictly it refers to any hormone whose molecule looks like that of cholesterol!

The most talked-about steroids are the anabolic steroids, such as testosterone. These are what are used by athletes such as bodybuilders to achieve gains in muscle mass. Dehydroxytestosterone is one long fancy chemical name for a popular anabolic.

But, there are also such things as "catabolic" steroids. "Catabolic" means to break down ("anabolic" means build up, of course!). Cortisol, a catabolic hormone made by our own bodies, is produced in response to various stressors; it tames our immune system and tries to stop it from overreacting. In the process, it has to break down muscle tissue and become prepared to store excess energy in the form of fat. People with excess cortisol (generally due to a tumor) generally have what is known as a Cushing's disorder, and obesity is its hallmark.

Cortisol and molecules like it are also given as drugs for various conditions, including multiple sclerosis, lupus, cancers, asthma, allergies, and the list goes on. Cortisol's family is the "corticosteroids", and includes corticosterone, methylprednilosone, prednisone, and dexamethasone. People do get put on these for various conditions, again... so if they're telling you they're taking steroids, it's probably not the kind that'll buff 'em up! ;-)
