90 to 96 explorers with the 4.0 6cyl engine come with a 19 gallon fuel tank and come from the factory getting about 17mpg.
your mpg may be a little off depending on how good of a condition it's in.
the best way to improve gas milage is to get a FULL tune up

Go to the gas station. Fill up tank as full as you can. Note mileage on your odometer.

Drive until tank is about half-empty. Again, fill up tank as full as you can. NOTE QUANTITY, gallons put into tank (these are the gallons used). Note mileage.

Subtract first mileage from second mileage. Divide by gallons used. This is your mpg.

We had a '94 Explorer XLT V-6. I think we got about 16 to 17 mpg, city and highway combined.
