The period stuff comes out of the vagina.
It's not fun, the hormones suck, the cramps suck, and the stuff that comes out sucks.
Some people get light cramps or none, there are regular cramps and then there are the kind that feels like something is trying to claw itself out.

It's discharge through the vagina--no anal discharge. For some women, the period can be very painful--your girlfriend may have a lot of cramps/soreness/pain in the muscles below her stomach. Some women also have pain in their vaginal area. Some women can also feel moody during their periods because of hormonal swings. It's different for every woman, but it sounds like your girlfriend probably has pretty tough periods. It's just for about five days each month, so try to be extra supportive during that time. And don't worry about asking her questions about where she hurts and what you can do to help--she might appreciate a heating pad or some hot chocolate. Little things like that will go a long way. Because her period may make her physically uncomfortable, she may not want to have sex or be intimate during this time--some women do, though, so it isn't the same for every woman. If she's in a lot of pain, she might appreciate your running little errands for her if you can--getting gas for her car, running to the store, things like that. The best thing I can compare it to is being sick with a stomach ache for a week, and feeling sad at the same time.
You don't need to feel too shy about asking her--girls are used to our periods, and she will appreciate your support and concern. Often, guys tease their girlfriends about their periods or make mean jokes about it. Don't do that!
I hope some of that helps--it's good that you're concerned about your girlfriend and asking questions. I'm sure she appreciates it!

Menstruation is a woman's monthly bleeding. It is also called menses, menstrual period, or period. When a woman has her period, she is menstruating. The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from the inside of the uterus (womb). It flows from the uterus through the small opening in the cervix, and passes out of the body through the vagina. Most menstrual periods last from three to five days.Menstruation is part of the menstrual cycle, which helps a woman's body prepare for the possibility of pregnancy each month. A cycle starts on the first day of a period. The average menstrual cycle is 28 days long. However, a cycle can range anywhere from 23 days to 35 days.
The parts of the body involved in the menstrual cycle include the brain, pituitary gland, uterus and cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and vagina. Body chemicals called hormones rise and fall during the month and make the menstrual cycle happen. The ovaries make two important female hormones, estrogen and progesterone. Other hormones involved in the menstrual cycle include follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), made by the pituitary gland.
In the first half of the menstrual cycle, levels of estrogen rise and make the lining of the uterus grow and thicken. In response to follicle-stimulating hormone, an egg (ovum) in one of the ovaries starts to mature. At about day 14 of a typical 28-day cycle, in response to a surge of luteinizing hormone, the egg leaves the ovary
Cramps, PMS, and Pimples
Some girls may notice physical or emotional changes around the time of their periods. Menstrual cramps are pretty common — in fact, more than half of all women who menstruate say they have cramps during the first few days of their periods. Doctors think that cramps are caused by prostaglandin, a chemical that causes the muscles of the uterus to contract.

OKAY, LISTEN UP......
It all depends on the person.
She may not be interested in having sex during her period because she is having cramps or perhaps because her hormone level at the time may be at the level that she is just not in the mood.
Also, it could be the fact that it's bad enough us women have to go through the hell of having a bloody crotch once a month, but to want to share it with a man, have to clean the bed (or where ever it takes place) having it on you, having it on her and all the other nastiness involved of having a period - may just be a total turn off to her.
You may want to ask yourself why it is such a big deal to want to have sex while she is on her cycle. Also, give her a break, let her 4-7 days of a period be her time, I'm sure you can go that long without having sex.
A woman's menstrual cycle is a very personal thing - even married women don't like to share every moment of it with her husband - especially having sex.
Quit taking it personal - quit thinking she's being a biatch for not wanting to have sex during her cycle and understand that it's bad enough to have to go through it each month without feeling the pressure of her boyfriend wanting to get his jollies while she's feeling like crap.
And......if you don't know that the blood comes from the vagina, not the anus - you don't sound mature enough to be having sex anyway!!!!!!!

Its not that its painful, it is just uncomfortable and women don't feel very affectionate or passionate at that time. We can have emotional swings right around that time, and we can often feel bloated (like we have too much gas in our stomachs) and heavy and generally "un-pretty".
Give her space - let her know you still care about her, like getting her little treats (flowers are nice). You won't die if you have a few days or a week of no sex. Read a book or go for a jog, and she'll be her old self in no time.

Well when a woman deals with her period she's not going to feel enthusiastic because how would you feel having a bloody river coming out of you for a week and wearing a cotton plug or pad for days on end. I wouldnt have sex while a woman's on her period because it would be quite messy.

Vaginal
It's not that it hurts, in fact sex actually makes cramps go away..
However, alot of women feel self conscious about the odor, and we do get cranky...sweet talk her into sex and she'll probably love you for it..everything is more sensative so orgasms ALOT easier to achieve, and the cramps do subside..
