I have a question about the OC.....?
in what way are summer and marissa related to each other,
because i thought they were just friends, but then when marissa dies, summer is living with the coopers....? i dont get it

but what happened to summers family?

Marissas mum, Julie Cooper married Summers dad Neil Roberts and they all lived together. Marissa and Summer started out as just friends but then their parents got together.

Summers dad and stepmum divorced which paved the way for Julie. Her mum died or something ages ago. Now more recently, Julie and Neil have split up and Neil has moved to Seattle for work leaving Julie and Kaitlyn (marissas little sister) living in the house. Summer came back for a visit for Thanksgiving but Neil had already left for Seattle.

This whole "relationship by marraige" thing happened during the second half of the third season. Dr. Roberts, Summer's father, divorced his third wife or so. Julie was widowed. There became an obvious attraction between them during one of the episodes. Later in the season, Dr. Roberts proposes to Julie, and she accepts. This would have made Summer and Marissa step sisters. As the story goes, step sisters usually hate each other. This was seen in a few episodes, but the sibling rivalry was cooled by the prom episode. Summer is not living with the Coopers, but vice versa. Julie and Marissa moved in with the Roberts officially after their folks were engaged. After Marissa passed away, Julie became distant from her fiance, and he was left not knowing what to do. In one of the episodes in the fourth season, he was revealed to have been moving to Seattle, where he was taking a new position. Thus, their engagement was called off, and Dr. Roberts kindly allowed Julie and her other daughter, Kaitlin, to remain in his mansion as along as necessary. Summer, now is away at college at Brown in Providence, RI.
