Anything is too much. Taxpayers foot the bill, and some company reaps the profits. When demand exceeds supply, innovations follow.

Depends on the year but about 1 tenth of 1 % of the total budget
I believe for strict R&D its less then 40 mill
We do give stipends to the oil companies of about 5 billion a year
So Exxon Mobile which broke all time records for profits about 3 times in the last year and a half(9.9 billion profit last time around)
They also gave their CEO a retirement package worth about 400 mill, they receive about 1.25 billion in taxpayer dollars. So we pay the richest companies in the world about a 15o times what we pay scientists new fuels and more efficent ways to use present technology

No where near enough since the big gas companies donate to political campaigns so our representatives vote to support the gas companies and not alternative energy sources.

Sad, isn't it?

I am not anti bush so don't think that. I do remeber shortly after he took office there was a bill passed to stop funding a lot of those programs. Of course that was 6 years ago so I have no idea what ever became of it.
