The only way to determine the area is by using Hero's formula.
Perimeter = 5+4+7 = 16
s = 16/2 = 8
Area = sqrt[(8)(8 - 5)(8 - 4)(8 - 7)}
= sqrt[8*3*4*1]
= sqrt(96)
= 9.79795897113271 (approx)
Nearest thousandth = 9.798
The area is 9.798 square units

To get the semiperimeter of the triangle, add the three sides together and divide by 2:
s =(a+b+c)/2, obviously 8 in this case.
Now that you have the values of a, b, c, and s, use Heron's formula for the area of a triangle:
Area = sqrt(s*(s-a)*(s-b)*(s-c)). You can work that out and round it to 3 decimal places for yourself.
But as usual, too late! Someone else wants to deprive you of the satisfaction of working it out for yourself!

area of a triangle with sides a, b and c
= sq root [s*(s-a)*(s-b)*(s-c)] where
s= (a+b+c)/2
here a=5 b=4 and c=7
so
s=(5+4+7)/2 = 16/2 =8
area = sq root [8*(8-5)*(8-4)*(8-7)]
= sq root [8*3*4*1]
= sq root [96]
=9.798
as you had asked for the nearest thousandths

s=a+b+c/2
s=5+4+7/2=8
area=(s(s-a)^2+(s-b)^2+(s-c)^2)^1/2
=(8(3)^2+(4)^2+(1)^2)^1/2
=(8(9+16+1)^1/2
=(8(26))^1/2
=(208)^1/2
