First of all Jeter is far from overrated. He is hated on by every person who doesn't have a guy like him on their team's roster. He had his career year this year in terms of offense and if there was ever a time where it looked like the yankees were not going to win and did....Jeter was involved in some way. SS is the most important position in the realm of playing the field. The other stupid thing about the mvp race is that the player who gets it should be CONSISTENTLY solid throughout the entire year. I had both players on my fantasy roster and had to drop morneau bc the guy was hitting .181. Lucky for me i got him back right as he hit his stride but how can a guy get the MVP if there was someone with more consistent #s throughout.....Lastly, ppl forget that the base of the Yankee dynasty in the last decade was built from Jeter up!

Derek Jeter had a great season this year, and certainly was his team's MVP, providing clutch hitting (unlike A-Rod), doing his best to keep them in the playoffs, hitting for a high average to set the table for the big guns, scored runs, stole bases, and did all the little things a team needs to win. However, Justin Morneau won it because he hit for power and contact, and hit well all through the season to keep his team in the playoff hunt. The Yankees never had much late-season drama, especially after the five-game Red Sox sweep. The sportswriters were swayed by the fact that Morneau led the Twins from third place and too far behind to overcome the Tigers, to a first place finish on the very last day, proving that heart and soul is just as important as talent and the players you have. In addition, Morneau's pure numbers were better (BA, HR, RBI, OBP, SLG, OPS). So you can see why the voters would choose Morneau over Jeter.

haha someone made a decent point, Jeter won the gold glove, which he had no right in winning.
Morneau was simply more valuable. The yankees would still have been a playoff team without Jeter, the Twins would not. Look at the central division, it went down to the last game. Yankees had it locked up in August.
Morneau was the most valuable player in that league.
This is not taking away from Jeter in anyway...

As a Red Sox fan I was very surprised of hearing Mourneau winning the MVP. Ortiz is a much more valuable than Morneau if you think of the clutch factor he brings. One of the biases the sports writers had was the fact that Jeter played for a very good team. 97 RBIS in the 2 spot doesn't mean much when you have Johnny Damon hitting in front of you. Mourneau was chosen because he wasn't on the best hitting team but was very effective in their winning of the division. Without him they probably wouldn't have scored enough runs to make the playoffs.

I think the real question is why Jeter won the Gold Glove. When the ball is hit to him, he's a fine fielding shortstop. When it's right to him. Or just to his left so he could perform his patented jump throw. Otherwise, Jeter's a below average fielding shortstop.
Yanks without Jeter = still beat the Red Sox. Twins without Morneau = 3rd place at the higest, 4th at the lowest.

OK. I'm not a baseball fan but my understanding of why Jeter didn't win and the guy from the Twins (?) did had something to do with how well he played over the season AND the fact that he isn't paid as 1/4 as much as Jeter is.

Simply put, Justin Morneau was the more valuable player to his team and in the AL! For anyone to say Derek Jeter "carried" the Yankees is laughable!

As a yankee fan I can say that he didnt deserve. Cmon to say Jeter carried the yankees is retarded. Damon had a career year,Cano emerged and u still had Posada,Melky,Giambi, and yes A-Rod(lol) comin through for that offense. Simply put Morneau had better stats and his team needed him alot more.

because the Twins don't have a good team compared to the Yankees'. Though Morneau's numbers were close to Jeter's this season, I think that Morneau got it for that, cuz' he carried on a much weaker team to the postsean
