I am not quite sure the amount, but I think that there was ash in the atmosphere for four years afterward.

Don't listen to the first person who answered this question. They clearly have no clue about what you are talking about.

Although the eruption of Mount Pinatubo was not the larget eruption in earths history it was however one of the largest of the largest of the 20th century. It was estimated by scientists who witnessed the eruption that up to 20 million tons of material was injected high into the atmosphere. This was mainly in the form of sulfate aerosols.

Sulfate aerosols have a cooling effect on the planet by reflecting the suns rays and bouncing them back into space. The eruption caused the worlds average global temp to go down by at least 0.5 degrees C. This may not seem like much but this kind of decrease from just one eruption and the fact that it was all over the earth was considered a huge amount. This cooling continued for at least 2 years after the eruption

Its is difficult to pin point precisely how much of the 20 million tons of material was what, whether it was in the form of Sulfur or CO2, but whatever the amount it was enough to alter the climate for a long time after the eruption. The fact that cooling was so much and lasted for so long it would be an educated guess that much of the 20 million tons of material was in the form of Sulfur dioxide.

Dunno... but the total volume of material ejected by the volcano may have been up to 25 cubic kilometres.

I personally saw the mushroom cloud formation that day... I was 8 years old at that time.
