I'm 10 weeks pregnant with twins and I heard that 50% of twins are born before term. Is there anything I can do (like changes in my lifestyle) to prevent that? I really wanted children, I am so happy I'm pregnant and I want them to have the best chance possible, I don't want them to end up in NICU for who knows how many weeks...
Thanks!

Hi! I have 10 month old identical twins. Here's a few thoughts:

1. I gave birth at 36weeks via scheduled c-section. Both babies were healthy, had no NICU time, and left the hospital with me. One was 5lbs2oz and the other was 6lbs1oz. It's important to keep in mind that most doctors consider 37 weeks "full term" for twins.

2. Not every set of twins ends up in the NICU. I stressed about that myself. I've met many moms of twins who even made it to 40 weeks before giving birth! Have you found a local Mothers of Twins Club? It helped to talk to other moms with twins when I was pregnant and worried about everything.

3. As for lifestyle changes - I stayed active through most of the pregnancy. I don't mean that I went to the gym but I also didn't lay on the couch all day. I made sure to get a reasonable amount of exercise and even walked to work daily!

4. I also made sure to eat right. I had horrible morning sickness so I was really strict about taking my pre-natal vitamins. I gained 50 pounds by the time I gave birth. I didn't restrict my calories but I did make healthy food choices. I also drank water constantly!

5. Find a good doctor that has experience with twins. Make sure she's/he's monitoring you properly. After my ultrasound at 21 weeks (where I found out it was twins) I had doctors visits every 2-3 weeks, growth ultrasounds every 3 weeks, and towards the end I had non-stress tests every 3 days.

Don't worry too much! Congrats on the twins!

as you get closer your doctor may put you on bed rest. Other then that make sure you are taking your vitamins and eating well. Twins born after 32 weeks tend to do very well even if they have to stay in the hospital a few days.

Your OB will keep you informed about what to do to keep them cooking as long as possible.

They usually come pre-term due 2 no space in the womb 2 grow anymore. When you are closer and your ob thinks it is a chance they will come sooner than they should he will probably put you on bedrest. Just make sure you follow everything he tells you to do while pregnant and you 3 will be fine.... Congratulations and Good Luck!!

No. The reason they are preterm is because there is not enough room for them both to grow to eight pounds. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. Most twins are smaller than singletons but perfectly healthy.

take care of yourself. consider seeing a perinatologist instead of or in addition to your regular OB.

stay hydrated, don't over-tire yourself, keep up a good weight, don't let yourself stress out.
best of luck to you and your babies!
