You really do not want to pierce your upper ear cartilage on your own. This is dangerous even when done by a professional. Your risk for infection, especially systemic infections which are antibiotic resistent is higher in cartilage piercings. You are also risking scaring and permanent deformation of the upper ear cartilage. Also, pushing an earring through cartilage is very painful. Most places can do it fairly inexpensively, like a Claires store.
However, if you must do it yourself: You need to wash your hands throughoughly. You will also need a stud (a sharp earring with a thicker post). The ear should be disinfected with alcohol. After you've pierced the ear you should clean it with ear antiseptic...DO NOT use alcohol or peroxide as this will cause infections. You should leave a stud in your ear for 8-12 weeks until the ear has fully healed. The ear should be cleaned 3 times a day and the earring rotated during this time. Anytime your healing ear get foreign material like soap, dirt, shampoo, etc..in it, you should also clean it. Hoops should not be wore for a least a year. Also when selecting an earring, you should choose one that is solid 14k gold or another type of nickle free earring as this will reduce your chances for infection.
Again, though I really do not recommend you do this on your own.

Hey there. I've pierced my own cartilage all but two times! First I santize my ear with rubbing alcohol, mark the spot and look over it a good few times in a mirror, soak the earring that you want to use in alcohol, line it up with the mark and shove it through. After I clean it very well, and do so about 3-4 times a day with anti-bacterial soap or a Saline Solution[Contact solution].

U dont I have seven piercing in each ear and trust me if u dont go to the professional it would get infected. All that use a pen...I wouldn't suggest that. If u really want to pierce a ear...use a sleeper it gradually pierces your ear. I havent done it but a friend has. The quickest way go to the professionals. When I got mine done it took a while to heal so...dont try it at home.

You dont! If you did it by yourself with a needle like all these other stupid are saying you could stab a vein thats in your ear and it could cause serious damage.....you probably would have to get part of your ear taken off....really.

use a pointed stud, make sure it and your ear is clean, mark where you want it and push it through. dont stop in the middle or it'll hurt even more. keep cleaning it through out the next few weeks.
**not all peircings peirced yourself get infected. some that i've had professionally done got infected, but one's i've done myself have not.**

it's very easy.
don't do it.
why is everyone wanting to pierce themselves all of a sudden? have a pro do it. even if it is just an ear, you can still mess yourself up.
