I'm black (don't get fooled by my avatar) It depends on whose saying it and how they are saying it. If someone says it to me and really means I'll assume they're rasist. If it seems to be all in fun then I take it as a joke.

ABSOLUTELY!
The "N" word is a slave-time word created to describe Blacks. It originates from the word "*****" being a person who is black and the whites decided to deteriorate the name by changing it to N&%$. It is still a thorn and an insult. And I don't care if other blacks call each other that, its just as wrong. Its a word that should never be used.
That word will forever mean that blacks are less than humans, that we are only 3/5 human and it shall never be accepted and it will forever remain offensive.

There is no such thing as a different race when it comes to humans. There can be genetic traits that differ color, but that can be shared genetically in exactly the same way as the color of a horse or tiger. We can try to separate people into catagories, and one can see the bloodline of color of hair, eyes, skin, but this does not make a different race.

My answer is that is a horrible word, and no matter what the correct answer (though i disagree with it not being offensive "anymore") the word shouldn't be repeated, it's one that has a deep, evil history; why would anyone want to use it?

It's offensive to older folks who remember the negative aspect of it or experienced it first hand.
Younger folks (who do not fully understand the word) use it on a daily basis.
It's like soldiers who have seen combat and the horrors of war, do not wish their kids to experience it.

The short answer is yes it's offensive. So, before anyone uses it they need to check themselves.

They will tell you that it is offensive. However, I get the feeling that it no longer offends them.
What does offend them is to be discriminated against in the world of business, sports, or entertainment.
For example, the answer is in a question "Are you offended if you are called a cracker, or white trash, or redneck?
My answer is "not any more."
