It's very safe. Like any other big city, keep your eye on your purse and wallet. I was in Barcelona for three months (I didn't speak Spanish or Catalan) and I was never robbed or threatened. In fact, the one time I left my cell phone in a taxi at 4:00 am, a nice girl on the street used her own cell phone to call my phone, give the taxi driver the address, and make a plan for the taxi driver to meet me to return to my phone. She even waited with me while the taxi driver came back. So I would say that people in Barcelona are very willing to help out a tourist as long as you are respectful and polite!

My wife and myself went to Barcelona September 2005. We are middle aged and had friends who live there , but from just walking around a LOT for 4 days I would say no problems at all. Seems to me it's a very layed back city and one of my favourite cities in the world. If not , the favourite.

As safe as it is for anyone else, we have never had any safety problems (apart from hookers !one night) Just stay in public well lit arears, and dont leave anything on show or on tables. Its fine really, you have to be on your guard anywhere. There are people from all over the world there.
