Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

Yes, there are several that come to mind. However, the best I think(after experimenting with various similar programs) is AVG by Grisoft. Specifically, the version is called 7.5 and was released on November 22 last. It is entirely free and contains all the contents necessary to protect your entire system, including an e-mail scanner and full resident shield recognized by Windows itself. I have itt on my computer running Windows XP Professional Edition and it fully protects me at all times. Go to either Cnet or download.com or www.grisoft.com and you can read the full story. I think it is great.

Try AntiVir Personal Edition. I use it and it works great. You should also try the free firewall by ZoneAlarm.
