It was actually a '62/'63 UK production but was sold to NBC and ran here in the US from '63 to '65 on Saturday mornings @ 10:30 AM. It was B&W and had a very catchy theme song.
Note: the same production team had a couple of other very similar series which were syndicated here but this one was the only one which was broadcast by a network.

You mut be thinking of Fireball XL5. It aired on NBC from October 62- October 63. The show was a major success for Anderson, being the first of his marionette shows to be sold to a US TV network (NBC), a rarity for British programmes at the time.
