The current drug laws really don't make sense and your idea has merit. There are always going to be drug users. Decrimiinalization will not make more drug users. It will reduce petty crime and strike a serious blow to organized crime.
Unfortunately, it would also make tens of thousands of government employees useless. They would have nothing to do and their bosses would lose their little empires. We can't have that, now can we? After all, it's only taxpayer funds they are wasting on a lost cause.

This is a rhetorical question. But you are right, the war on drugs is costing a lot. However, there is a lot being done. Choosing to do drugs is not a solution for any kind of problem. But as long as there is drugs out there someone will abuse it and someone will sell it to make a profit.
The people have to not want to do drugs. We need a system of sanctions which is why they build more prisons these days.
Now days a drug offense can send you to prison for a long time. Even for the user. Actually, especially for the user.
Being in a mental instiute for a long time is not fun. People take their freedom for granted.
I'm surprised we don't incriminate celebrities who do drugs. We hear about them all the time but they continue having privleges above the public. Most of us would love to have a better job where we get paid more but we have no choice but to work hard while other people who are irresponsible get away with so much.
There are so many hard working people out here who never do drugs. They work for little pay, they work 2 jobs and live almost in poverty.
I say give them the privleges and the money because they deserve it.

E maybe legalized again for medicinal purposes, so hold on to your kid! You can get any drug, even prescriptions easier than alcohol. If you buy it in Quantity it will sell a lot cheaper than buying just one pill. It usually goes 1 for $20 or $15. Any lower than $10 is taking asprin, or making it. In Japan it's like $40.

For the same reason you can't buy up all the wheat, coffee or corn in the world. The producers would simply grow/produce more of it to sell to the government and to their old private buyers. Then more & more producers would get into this new booming market & the supply of drugs would grow enormously. The producers would grow fabulously rich on your tax money.

Because their 'Sponsors', the 'legal' Drug Cartels would withdraw all the back-handers that put those governments in power, in the first place.

i don't see that happening. the federal government would have to legalize such drugs before legitimately purchasing them,
wouldn't they? it won't happen.
although, shoot, if it did...they could slap a tax on the drugs, sell them to the many citizens who, ah, "necessitate" their import, and kiss the budget deficit goodbye. maybe this idea is not so crazy...hmmmm...

The "source" would just move to a new location... It wouldn't work. Legalizing *all* drugs would.
