Hi, when i learned i only took lessons for about a month and they were helpful mostly because i had homework and i felt like i had to do it. What i am trying to say is that if you have patience and really make yourself practice you will learn by yourself. Check this site; it is mainly for folk music but it has good lessons to start out. http://www.folkofthewood.com/page5301.htm

This other site is also good for lessons and you can even find a lot of tablatures. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/lessons/for_beginners/

This other site is also good for lessons and here you can see the basic guitar chords. http://www.cyberfret.com/chords/beginning-7/index.php

What type of music do you want to learn? Some styles are harder than others. For example. the first songs that i learned were Zombie by The Cranberries ( very easy) and Redemption Song ( Bob Marley).

Oh one more thing. Do a lot of practice exercises for both your right and left hand. Before you start learning songs, learn the basic chords.

Well hope that this is helpful, If you have any questions let me know...jonny

buy a song book! no need for sites--you can skip this go straight to practical application. you can buy an ouido song book. ouido is the chord diagram.in some books it is placed above the lyrics and letter chords in the song book. at the back or middle of most song books there is a guitar chord chart too. listen to a lot of music that inspires your genre. try john mayer, raul midon, eric clapton if you are learning acoustic. you can search on youtube for different live performances and just absorb from there. a song book is the first step for you. when you know the basics then you can get someone to teach you advance methods and styles. good luck!

you must first learn to be familiar with guitar tabs or chords.. all you need is a chord chart and a guitar of course. self-studying could also be a lot of fun, hope that helps! goodluck!
