So, I'm about to wean my daughter off breastmilk and I was walking through the baby aisle of the grocery store and nearly had a heart attack when I saw the price of formula. Does anyone know why it's so freaking expensive? Do they make it with gold or something?

Simply because you need it. They'll charge you more because you have no other choice. As well, the no name brands are just as good. (they are generally cheaper due to the fact of less advertising costs) Also, I'm sure there is alot of quality control going on.
Although it takes a little more time, and is kind of frustrating, use the powder kind, it is much cheaper!!! (Unless you buy parents choice, Wal-Mart) then they're the same price.

I know its ridiculous. I'm not due until June, but I've been cruising around baby ailes and looking at prices and its insane. I wish I could breast feed, but I honestly don't know if I'll have the time. I know it sounds wrong, but I work full-time and I'm going to be a single parent, and I'm not expecting to get any help from the child's father since he's moving to another state, so formula is what I'm going with. I've checked prices at the grocery store and at babies r us, and babies r us is soooo much cheaper! The big cans of powder formula are about 20 bucks (for the name brands), and diapers are about 35 bucks for a pack of 200. That's where I'm shopping once the baby is born!

LOL you would think it had gold in it! It is so expensive. I guess it is like diapers, the companies know we have to have it so they can charge a lot. Have you thought about checking to see if you are eligible for WIC. It will certainly help. The Good Start is about the cheapest and it is really good. It actually has worked better for my daughter than other more expensive formulas. We even tried a special order one that was 39.99 a can! Good Luck.

It's because of all those free samples and coupons they give out to breastfeeding moms. Those coupons have to get paid for somehow! So they jack up the price of formula to convince mothers to use formula by providing it for "free."

Also because of WIC formula. WIC gets rebates from formula companies on state contracts to the tune of 95%. This means WIC will foot the bill for a $20 can of formula, and then they'll go ahead and send in a rebate request to Enfamil (or whatever company that state happens to use for WIC) and Enfamil sends them a $19 rebate check.

It is expensive because people NEED it. Try to freeze as much breast milk as you can before you start weaning. Also call the manufacturers of the formula companies (800 numbers on containers) and ask for free samples and coupons. You can also do this with diapers, baby food, and other products. Ask your family to call as well. You can go to the companies websites and do this too. I just found it faster to call them.

I breastfeed my last 2 children, I tried them on formula just so i could have a break every now and then and their dad could feed them. They wouldnt drink it. My now 5 year old, stopped breast feeding at 10 months and wouldnt have formula either. She went straight to cows milk. My younger daughter (2 and a half) wouldnt drink formula and still doesnt really like cows milk.

As for the price all baby stuff is expensive, milk, nappies(diapers) clothes, cots, prams.

WIC is an excellent help in buying formula. If you qualify you can get it for free.

Although breastfeeding is best for your child. You should try pricing breastmilk from a donor and you would appreciate the price of formula because it is inferior.
