Could be hormones - as we age we don't produce the same amount of the right female hormones as when we were younger. The clots could be the uterine lining "aging" a bit before it starts to slough off (which is what your period is).
I turned 50 this year, and I found sometimes the same thing. As well as irregular periods (sometimes only lasted a day or 2, a couple of times it lasted on and off for almost 3 weeks - THAT was not fun).
Now I take Black Cohosh and Soy herbal supplements, and everything is sort of back in order.

I'm with lindajune... yeah... middle age... sucks the big one... clots... not at all irregular. Not fun either. My doc put me back on the pill to help and what a difference that made too.
So... if you like the natural way or with chemicals - either might be helpful But do check in with your doc.

Being on the pill though, only til I am 50 and then I have to see if this whole thing will just go away.
I'll let ya know!

I had the same problem the older I got. I did not have endometriosis, but that can be a cause. I just had an endometrial ablation, it was a very easy and safe procedure. It has reduced the amount of bleeding and the large clots. You need to talk to your doctor and explore the many options they have for women.

You might want to bring it up with your doctor at the next visit, but it's probably normal. My mother had this problem when she was in her early forties, a few years before she went through menopause. It might be a sign you're nearing menopause.

Of course if you're having other symptoms, like lightheadedness, I'd contact the doctor ASAP.
