Well, the easy answer is that it celebrates St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. In practice, in the U.S. it has become also a celebration of Irishness itself--music, literature, the history of Irish immigration, etc. Some people I've heard even have been known to have a glass of Guiness stout or an Irish coffee on that day.

apparently he was actually from england but he brought christianity over to ireland. also it is said that he drove all the snakes from ireland. on st patrick's day we honour our patron saint by celebrating our being Irish :D

it celebrates st. patrick. you celebrate that he rid ireland of snakes, etc. here in america, it has been commercialized so our view is that you just wear green on that day.
