Yes you can close the doors make sure the air vent is open a bit and it will be lovely and warm for you, this way your house wont fill up with smoke and if you want to keep it going all night close, up all the vents and let it burn slow all night then you wake up to a nice worm house and there should be still a few hot live coals to get it going again in the morning. I do this all winter I never have to relight a fire it goes for three months like this, in the mornings after a couple days I put the live coals to one side and clean it out then just put some kindling on it, and its a nice roaring fire again

Closing the glass doors keeps the fire burning longer and slower. If you have a blower it helps the heat stay in and the blower blows the heat out. Opening the glass doors makes the fire burn faster, and can also cause the sparks to fly out onto your floor so it is also a safety factor. This is for a wood burning stove w/ a blower. If its just a regular fireplace then it doesnt matter as much.but you have to adjust the flue to keep the smoke out.

I would recommend for you to burn with them closed for a number of reasons.
1) it limits the heated interior air lost up your chimney. Although it also limits the radiant heat retained by the fire.
2) it eliminates the smoke entry into the living area.

Bottom line: It sounds counterintuative I know...but you loose heat when you light your traditional wood fireplace. Only use it for ambiance, not to generate heat to save money on your gas bills.
If you are interested in that...plug your fireplace flue good and tight with a chimney balloon and upgrade the furnace.

As far as I know, it's better to keep the glass doors closed to keep the smoke up and out to the vent.
