Goldfish "can" live to a grand old age of 30 if everything goes right, and as mentioned the oldest is over 40 years.

The thing is that the goldfish we keep are mutants. There are no "goldfish" as we know them (round body, long tail) in the wild, the nearest thing in the wild to the goldfish is a carp or comet like fish.

From what I gather, it started when someone in china notice this mutant carp like fish with a slight orangy colour(normally its greenish yellow I read), so they breed the fish for its colour, then someone decided that the shorter body of this fishes looks better so the breed for fishes with shorter body and longer tails. Till today, people are still breeding for specific traits. eg. Ranchu.

Due to this selective breeding, the shape of the goldfish isn't what nature design it to be anymore. That's the reason why, the goldfish we have now tends to have floating issue and buoyancy problem easily. Their round body just isn't a good evolutionary design. Which is another reason why they don't last very long, a 10 years old fish on average (esp the round ones) would be considered an old one. The longer body species tend to live longer.

My longest living goldfish is about 4~5 years old now and have the body of a adult fist size :)

not sure, they probably should live for like 10 years + but becaue of poor water quality and poor maintenance most people cant even keep one alive for a month. my bf would buy a new fish almost every month, he could not work out why they kept dying turns out he was over cleaning and maintaining. I had 2 fish the first one last almost 6 years and the other last 5 years, the first one died when we moved and then a week later the second one died, I think it was due to bad water. They were so cute with there big eyes lol, i even named them Sassypaints and Littleman

When I was young, I had a goldfish live for 8 years. But I think that might be a record. Most live for only about 3, if they're healthy.

It all depends on how he has been taken care of. My fish mickey is about a year old and i have been feeding him everyother day and haven't put in a new filter for 4 months. he is as healthy as could be. The same with my older brother he has been taking care of his fish for about 3 years the same method. I also have a friend who had a tiger fish, sucker, and an fish that you could see his bones for 7 years!

The oldest on record was 43!!!

With optimal conditions (look here for goldfish care www.kokosgoldfish.com) they live for 10 to 20 years. They have personalities and learn to eat from your hands if you let them.
