That is a really, really difficult question to answer. The DS has such a wide variety of games for so many different tastes and play styles.
If you like platformers, I'd say Kirby Canvas Curse
If you like RPGs, go with Final Fantasy III
If you like puzzlers, DEFINITELY Meteos!
If you like brain teasers, go with the original Brain Training
If you like multiplayer, go with Mario Kart
If you like something musical, Electroplankton
If you'd like something relaxing and cute, Nintendogs
If you'd like a relaxing life sim, Animal Crossing

The best DS games out right now are Final Fantasy III, Castlevania Dawn of Souls, Trauma Center and Nintendogs is pretty fun, you just need to play everyday if you want to keep your dogs flea-free and fed.

Pokemon ranger is really good. A few others are lost magic, brain age, Animal Crossing: Wild Worlds, mario basketball 3 on 3 is really fun, and the basic nintendog games.
