There is no one place that Darwin "got" his theory and certainly no one "how". The galapagos were a big part of it, Darwin collected and observed species of birds from different islands of the galapagos. These birds had been seperated into different populations and thus were allowed to take seperate evolutionary paths. I would suggest watching some of the documentary produced by NOVA called EVOLUTION. The first two one-hour episodes are called "Darwins Dangerous Idea" and deal with Darwin formulating his theory.

Like any other scientist, he built on the ideas of others (perhaps most notedly, his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin). Perhaps the single biggest contribution was serendipity. He collected a variety of birds on the Galapagos Islands but misidentified them. An ornithological anatomist explained that they were all finches. Darwin realized that once some finches arrived at the romote islands, possibly driven by a storm, then adapted to fill all niches that could be occupied by flighted birds. This experience let him synthesize the ideas of others (including Wallace) into "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life".
