i found out that my pap smear results turned out abnormal. and that i have to have a colpo exam done.. i'm kinda scared and i was wondering if that is done to determine any disorders that could be found? or what is it done for? i was told something to do with having sex and it was transmitted from that. i have only had sex with my boyfriend for the past year. does that mean that i got it from him?...and he should be checked as well? could it be just nothing to worry about... or does it mean there is something wrong....?

i had this exact same thing happen to me. I've only had sex with my boyfriend for less than a year. in february of this year i had a period that lasted for a month. when i went for a pap smear in april, i found out in may that my results were also abnormal and i needed to have a colposcopy. what happens wit this is they check to see if you can possibly have any type of cancer or disease inside you. The gyno will put some vinegar on your cervix, i wont lie, it stings A LOT! but what the vinegar does is show if have any abnormalities on your cervix but showing white spots. If you have white spots then they'll take a biopsy of it (a sample of the white spots.) and you wont be able to have sex for a week. if the biopsy shows that there are more abnormalities you'll have to go for a minor surgery called a cone biopsy. they'll put you to sleep and try to remove all the abnormalities and you wont be able to do any heavy lifting, lots of walking, or have any sex for AT LEAST 3 weeks. having sex at a young age, or having rough sex all the time can contribute to this. hope this helps! and good luck! :D

Here's some helpful info on the exam:

With a colpo exam it is easy to determine venereal wart, ASCUS and other disorders of the cervix. If the affected area is not very large, it can be treated during the same visit with a biopsy or LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure.) Tiny samples of tissue (biopsies) are taken from the abnormal areas for a pathologist to examine under the microscope. With a colpo exam it is easy to determine venereal wart, ASCUS and other disorders of the cervix.
