For one:
As an adult, Bowie went into the Caribbean slave smuggling business with his brothers, earning a reputation as a deadly knife fighter among the denizens of the lower Mississippi River. By the late 1820s, he began speculating in land backed by financial partners in Natchez.

james bowie was mainly a gambler and land speculator , among other things. he went to texas , as did a lot of the other so called heroes of the texas revolution, for just that purpose, to speculate on land. those that lived (houston, austin, seguin, and others) did very well after the revolution.
unfortunately for bowie, crocket, and others, they were at the wrong place at the wrong time and didn't live to make their fortunes as they had hoped.
this is not to take away from the heroism of those that gave their lives, but sometimes the legend is greater than the actual facts.
hero or wuss ? that is forever going to be a debate i'm afraid. sorry i couldn't have been more helpful.

Apparently he died in the Alamo which was a seige situation as far as my un american 40 odd year old education went .
Doesnt that already answer your question , right there ?
Having problems understanding " seige situation " . . . get on to wikipedia , pump in " seige " together with " Stalingrad " that was a little bit bigger than the Alamo , perhaps the bigness of it all will help bring your perspective into a little clearer focus .
What's a wuss, just so as to help my education out as you are going on ( a bit ) , got to do with the Alamo / Jim Bowie , what is your occupation , are you one of those Tex / Mex wuss diggers then , a pot trying to call a kettle black , if so might I take this liberty to divert your attencion in the direction of Santa Ana .
Shees , nothing wuss than a tex mex santy ana supporting wuss digger getting education on answers yahoo , canuckatania !

He was sort of a sad case because he was sick most of the time, locked up in a hot room with little ventilation. When the end came it was probably gross. He was actually a scout and guide, but mostly just a local celebrity gone national.
